The Kuba Raffia Lantern in solid padauk, Africa's sacred red wood, casts a soft light through its openwork motifs inspired by woven Kuba raffia. Once lit, it projects its patterns across your walls like a caress of light. Designed by AFROBYNATURE, crafted by Wouley
Bring a touch of elegance and authenticity to your home with the Kuba Raffia Lantern, a decorative solid-wood lamp finely pierced with motifs inspired by woven Kuba raffia. Each detail lets the light filter through and, once lit, the lantern casts its patterns onto the surrounding walls — the whole room dressed in shapes of light and shadow.
We did not carve it from just any wood. Padauk is the "red wood" of Central Africa, held sacred for generations: ground into powder, it adorns the skin at births, marriages and life's great passages — wherever red speaks of life, vitality and protection. That red and light were made to meet. Once the lantern is lit, the warmth of padauk's orange tones gently catches fire: the wood seems to hold the glow of a flame, the colour of a setting sun. Light does not merely pass through the material — it awakens it, and with it all the memory it carries.
The openwork motifs running across its faces draw on the famous Kuba cloths of the kingdom of the same name in Central Africa: an art of woven and embroidered raffia, where each geometric weave has told a story for centuries. Translated into wood, these geometries give the lantern a character both graphic and warm, at home in modern, contemporary or ethnic-chic interiors alike.
The Kuba Raffia Lantern was born of an encounter: the design of AFROBYNATURE, drawing a contemporary language from African traditions, and the craftsmanship of Wouley, giving the drawing form in solid padauk. A piece imagined by one, shaped by the other — and unique by nature: the shades of the wood, its grain and the cut of the motifs never quite repeat.
An ambient lamp that blends design, craftsmanship and authenticity to elevate your spaces with character — and bring home a fragment of African soul.
