Our flagship piece. A round artwork carved from the solid mass of a padauk block, 2.7 cm thick, where the whole textile art of the African continent comes back to life. Patterns woven from memory, a lion carved at its heart, and a sacred wood steeped in history. Hang it as a work of art — or lay it flat to elevate a beautiful table. Ø 38 cm.
Some objects make you stop and look. This is one of them.
Close your eyes for a moment. You are somewhere between Bamako and the highlands of western Cameroon. In the markets, women unfurl cloths heavy with stories: bogolan and its ochre earth, royal weavings with their tight geometries, cottons pulsing with signs handed down for generations. Each strip of fabric is a sentence, each pattern a word in a language the thread has kept alive.
This artwork is that memory, carved into wood.
Cut from the solid mass of a padauk block, 2.7 cm thick, its surface gathers and composes the continent's textile vocabulary: zigzags that flow like water, marching chevrons, labyrinthine meanders, cascading circles and dots. Nothing is laid onto the wood — everything is raised from it, in deep relief, in an African padauk whose warm, natural reddish-orange tones seem to hold the light of dusk. A true colour, unstained, that will only grow richer over the years.
At its heart watches a lion, carved as a medallion. Strength, nobility, protection: its presence runs across the whole continent — and here, it carries the soul of Cameroon, where the piece comes to life in our workshop.
Padauk, a wood unlike any other. Choosing padauk is never a neutral act. In Central Africa, this "red wood" has been held sacred for generations. Ground into powder and blended with oil, it has long adorned the skin at life's great thresholds — births, marriages, initiations, passages. Here, red is the colour of life itself: of blood, of vitality, of protection. In carving this work from padauk, we did not simply choose a beautiful wood — we chose a material heavy with memory, one that carries the strength and the blessing of the continent.
Then comes its double life. Mounted, it stands as a wall artwork that anchors a room and warms it with a breath of elsewhere. Laid flat, it becomes a table centrepiece, a setting for a bouquet or a place setting — the rare detail that turns a dinner into a memory.
A Wouley signature — where wood remembers, and tells its story.
